SQL Server Modeling (codename "Oslo") Almost Dead
It's being almost three years now since Microsoft first announced "Oslo" in November 2007, later renamed SQL Server Modeling. After a long quiet incubation period Microsoft is now announing the "premature" termination of two out of the three parts of this technology. Indeed, the SQL Server based "Oslo" repository and the query, update and visualization tool codenamed "Quadrant" will not be brought to market. They are abandoning those technologies in favor of the Open Data Protocol (OData) and the Entity Data Model (EDM). Microsoft says they will continue investmenting in the last piece of the puzzle: the language codenamed “M”. This technology for defining schema, constraints, queries, and transformations is still receiving significant interest from the industry. Microsoft didn't announce any plans for the release of this technology yet.
